What is Step-Up SIP?
A Step-Up SIP, also called a top-up SIP, is a Systematic Investment Plan in which your monthly instalment increases by a fixed percentage every year. Instead of investing the same amount forever, your SIP grows along with your income.
For example, with a 10% annual step-up, a ₹10,000 monthly SIP becomes ₹11,000 a month in the second year, ₹12,100 in the third year, and so on.
Because you invest more as the years go by, a Step-Up SIP can build a much larger corpus than a regular SIP that starts with the same amount.
Fun fact
Even a small yearly step-up makes a big difference over long periods, because every increase also earns compounded returns for the rest of the investment period.
What is a Step-Up SIP Calculator?
A Step-Up SIP calculator estimates how much your investment could grow to when your monthly SIP increases by a fixed percentage every year.
It gives you a rough estimate, not the exact amount you will receive. The actual return depends on factors such as future market returns, the fund’s expense ratio and how long you stay invested.
Why you should use a Step-Up SIP Calculator?
- Simplifies the process: With the instalment changing every year, working out the final value by hand is tedious. The calculator does it in seconds.
- Plan with your income: See how raising your SIP in line with your salary changes the amount you can build.
- Helps in comparison: Compare different step-up percentages, return rates and time periods before you start investing.
How Does a Step-Up SIP Calculator Work?
The Step-Up SIP calculator works on the following inputs:
- Monthly Investment (P): The amount you invest every month in the first year.
- Annual Step-up (s): The percentage by which your monthly SIP increases every year.
- Expected Return Rate (R): This is the anticipated rate of return you expect to earn yearly.
- Time Period (N): Number of years for which you want to invest.
Each year is treated as a regular SIP at that year’s instalment, which then keeps growing until the end of the period. The values for all the years are added together:
Future Value = Σ P × (1 + s)^k × {[(1 + r)^12 – 1] ÷ r} × (1 + r) × (1 + r)^(12 × (N – 1 – k)), for k = 0 to N – 1
- P
- Monthly Investment in the first year
- s
- Annual Step-up ( Annual Step-up / 100 )
- r
- Monthly Growth rate = ( Expected Return Rate ) / 12
- k
- Year number, starting from 0
Let’s work through an example for better understanding.
Formula to Calculate Step-Up SIP Returns with an Example
Consider an example for a better understanding.
- Monthly Investment: ₹10,000
- Annual Step-up: 10%
- Time Period: 5 years (60 months)
- Expected Return Rate: 12% per annum (1% per month)
Your monthly SIP will be ₹10,000 in year 1, ₹11,000 in year 2, ₹12,100 in year 3, ₹13,310 in year 4 and ₹14,641 in year 5, for a total investment of ₹7,32,612.
After calculation, you will get an approximate future value of ₹9,84,570.
In comparison, a regular ₹10,000 SIP for the same period would grow to about ₹8,24,864.
What are the benefits of a Step-Up SIP?
- Grows with your income: Your investment keeps pace with salary hikes, so you don’t have to remember to increase it yourself.
- Larger corpus: Investing more every year helps you reach your financial goals faster than a fixed SIP.
- Beats inflation: Increasing your SIP every year helps your savings keep up with the rising cost of living.
