What Is a Brokerage Calculator?
Every trade you place carries charges on top of the share price: the broker’s brokerage, plus taxes and fees collected by the government, the exchange and SEBI. A brokerage calculator shows all of these charges before you trade.
Enter your buy price, sell price and quantity, and the calculator shows your total charges, your gross profit or loss, and how much the price needs to move just to cover the costs.
Charges differ between intraday, delivery and MTF trades in equity, and between futures and options, so choose the segment that matches your trade.
Fun fact
For small intraday trades, charges can eat up a large part of your profit. Checking your breakeven before you trade helps you set realistic targets.
Charges included in the calculation
- Brokerage: The broker’s fee: 0.1% of the order value or ₹20 per executed equity order, whichever is lower, with a minimum of ₹5. Futures and options are a flat ₹20 per executed order.
- Securities Transaction Tax (STT): A tax on the value of shares and derivatives traded on the exchange.
- Exchange Transaction Charges: Fees charged by the exchange (NSE or BSE) on your turnover.
- SEBI Turnover Charges: A small regulatory fee on your turnover.
- Stamp Duty: A government duty on the buy side of the trade.
- GST: 18% on brokerage, exchange transaction and SEBI charges.
When you sell shares from your demat account in a delivery trade, a DP (depository) charge of ₹18.25 + GST also applies. It is charged once per sell transaction and is not included in the totals above.
How Does a Brokerage Calculator Work?
The calculator adds up every charge for both the buy and the sell side of your trade:
Turnover = (Buy Price + Sell Price) × Quantity
Gross P&L = (Sell Price – Buy Price) × Quantity
Points to Breakeven = Total Tax & Charges ÷ Quantity
Calculate Brokerage with an Example
Consider an intraday equity trade on NSE:
- Buy Price: ₹1,000
- Sell Price: ₹1,050
- Quantity: 100 shares
Your turnover is ₹2,05,000 and your gross profit is ₹5,000. Brokerage is ₹40 (₹20 on each order), and with STT, exchange charges, SEBI fees, stamp duty and GST, your total charges come to about ₹83.62.
That means the price needs to move about ₹0.84 per share just to cover the charges.
What are the benefits of using a Brokerage Calculator?
- Know your real profit: See what you actually take home after every charge, not just the price difference.
- Plan your trades: Use the breakeven to set targets that cover your costs.
- Compare segments: See how charges change between intraday, delivery, futures and options.
